Hey guys, welcome to the Learn Feng Shui podcast where ancient traditions meets modern living. I'm Candice Berlanga, certified Feng Shui practitioner and red ribbon professional with the international fune guild.
Today we're going to be talking about the snake. Uh it is the snake month in Chinese metaphysics and it is a time of deep transformation. It represents a rising fire energy and as we shift into May in the summer season, the fire element is beginning to grow. And just like the snake shedding its skin, this is your seasonal cue to refine, refocus, and let your inner fire rise. Whether you're looking to refresh your home, energize your work life, or explore a bit of oldw world symbolism, this episode will give you the ideas for making the most of this powerful seasonal energy.
Let's get into it. All right, guys. Well, we moved into the month of the snake around May 5th or so and that will go till around June 6. The snake is the energy of yin fire. The snake represents the month of May and the hours between 9 and 11 a.m.
We are in the month of the metal snake, but the snake marks the beginning of the fire energy and the summer season in this yearly five element cycle. The body parts it represents are the spleen. And in your home, you can find it around 147.5 to 152.5 degrees souththeast. You can find that there. You can activate this energy to tap into that snake energy.
Although remember it is the Grand Duke or the Thai soy of the year and you really don't want to activate that area too much. You can place yourself in the southeast or even just face the degree away from southeast. So, you want to sit with your back to 147.5 to 152.5 degrees. And it said that if you appease the Grand Duke, he's supposed to make you more bold and you can use that energy to actually gain authority because you're using the Grand Duke energy. If you offend the Grand Duke, that means you're facing the degrees of 147.5 to 152.5, and that can actually cause problems with authority.
You know, I've seen people sleeping in the area have bad health, bad mental health, and even nightmares if you sleep in the area that's has the grand soy for the year. So, if you're sleeping there, you might want to shift your bed over. And you want to avoid this if you have a pig in your zodiac chart. The clash line for the zodiac of snake is the pig. And they sit in direct opposition to each other.
The snake is the energy of fire and the pig is the energy of water. So we want to avoid, you know, activating the area if you have a pig. Likewise, you want to avoid the pig if you have the snake. The snake has a lot of symbolic meanings. So the snake the snake is linked to wisdom, strategy, subtle power, and mystery.
It represents transformation like shedding your skin. Uh making this season a great time to evolve or refine business branding or personal goals. Snake also has a lot of spiritual associations often a guardian of sacred knowledge in ancient cultures. Looking at the fire energy can bring to the seasonal shift. May brings this bright and dynamic energy.
It's an expressive energy of fire. Fire relates to passion, visibility, joy, reputation and even uh branding. Embrace this growing yang energy and the warmth that's growing is really good for personal expression and showing up boldly in business and even nurturing relationships and talking. Remember that the snake represents the energy of yin fire like I just mentioned. That is more subtle than the energy of the horse which is coming next month, the peak of the season.
Whereas this horse is like the sun and it likes to be visible and seen and show off. The snake is a little more calm and quiet in that. They need more time to kind of reflect, but they do have this passion and they have this energy that can inspire other people. The snake is this candle-like type energy. And so it and as you may know, a candle has the ability to light a hundred more candles with its small flame.
And that can catch on big. So it's just a little bit different energy than that yang horse energy. Easy ways to use this fire energy in your home. You can use pops of color, red, pink, vibrant oranges, and little just touches like that, flowers, candles, and even artwork. You can use real or LED candles to symbolically ignite the home's energy.
You can add triangle shapes and warm lighting to cozy up a space. And again, you can just use this temporarily for a seasonal balance. You don't have to do a whole fun overhaul and make everything red in your home. I remember one time seeing uh uh somebody share that they advised a client to paint triangles like red triangles all over the room and it was to me an eyes sore. I would not recommend painting red triangles all over your room for the fire energy.
Just subtle pops of color and fire energy like a lamp. That will be just fine. And you can just do it sparingly, like have it by your front door. One of the ways I incorporate brighter colors into my seasonal decorations, I know I've mentioned before that I do seasonal decorations. Uh in the summer in the US, we do have Fourth of July, but before that, I like to bring in just some vibrant colors and I have a display of fruit that I put up on one of my seasonal shelves.
And in June, I'll throw in some rainbow kind of colors just to celebrate uh Pride Month. I have a child that's LGBTQ, so I want them to know that I'm supportive. And so, we put a pops of rainbow in with that with those colors. And then outside, I do a rainbow flag. And I found some really cute rainbow planters last year.
And the so those rainbow colors even will add a bright pop of color to your space, especially the primary colors. If you're looking more a shimmery, iridescent metallic type colors, that's going to be a metal energy. But a bright rainbow primary colors, that's going to be, I would say, your fire energy. So, you can definitely add some bright rainbowy type colors, too. I have some watermelon decor also that I swap out for the season, and I kind of keep that up and move it around for Fourth of July.
So, watermelon and strawberries, of course, to add that pop of red just makes it kind of fun. Let's go to the next segment here and look at more of the s snake symbolism through ancient cultures. I found this great PDF here from missouri.edu. So I'm going to include that as a link in the show notes. But I'm going to kind of summarize here.
The article is entitled The Symbolism of the Snake. And so again, I'll include that in the show notes. So I'm just going to recap here, but there's several points that this article makes. The duality of meaning, as I mentioned earlier, the snake represents the enlightenment or hidden knowledge. Of course, in Judeo-Christian societies and traditions, the serpent is seen as cutting and evil due to its role in the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.
And but in many ancient cultures again that snake was seen as a symbol of divinity, healing, and protection. There's just a little bit of kind of a split there in the way we see this snake. I think sometimes the snake gets a little bit of a bad rap. But again, in many ancient societies, the snake was revered and was a sign of healing and protection. And we'll come into that in just a second.
Talk about healing. Um, Egyptian symbolism. The cobra represented the goddess protector of lower Egypt and it was worn by pharaohs on crowns as a Urasus, a divine insignia and cobra amulets were also used by commoners for protection. Greek associations snake were seen as sacred to mother earth and associated with the underworld. The healer god Eskeipius carried a staff with a single snake still a symbol for medicine today.
Snakes symbolize rejuvenation because they shed their skin. Again going back to that healing and we know the symbolism today carries on where the kadesius the snakes woven around staff can still be seen as a symbol of medicine. Healing and talismans. Ancient sanctuaries of Asipius included sacred snakes that were thought to absorb illness and snake imagery is was used in jewelry and served as a healing talisman or fertility charm. And going back to the kadesius hermes staff with two snakes had magical powers and it was said to hypnotize or make you go to sleep.
That may trace back to the me Mesopotamian god that was associated with the underworld. And I think in pop culture, we can still see this represented today in like movies like Aladdin. That's what I think about when I hear of the Cadesius is Jafar who was able to hypnotize the Sultan and others with his staff with a copra on it. So I think that's pretty interesting that comes into today's world. And in Hinduism and Buddhism, the copra represents Nagas, a underworld deity who was often benevolent.
The Naga king famously protected the meditating Buddha from a storm and it symbolized divine guardianship and transformation. Speaking of Hinduism and Buddhism, the snake also represents something called the condundalini. You may have heard of it. It's kind of a buzzword I think with new age. It is a coiled spiritual energy said to rest at the base of your spine and bring you enlightenment.
In these traditions, awakening the condalini is considered sacred and powerful. But it also comes with a series of responsibilities and risks especially when taken out of context. So let's move on to the next segment where I talk about the warnings and the preparedness you need to do to activate your condundalini. As we've seen the snake is a powerful and sacred symbol across many ancient cultures representing transformation, healing, and spiritual wisdom. But that symbolism also comes with a reminder.
Sacred power isn't something to be taken lightly, guys. In many traditions like yoga and tantric lineages, the snake represents this condundalini energy, a potent spiritual force that is coiled at the base of your spine in your I believe it's your root chakra. And the idea of awakening the kunalini might sound exciting or even trendy in some wellness circles, but the reality is it's pretty complex. It isn't just breath work or stretching. It's a deep spiritual process that if approached without the right foundation can lead to confusion, imbalance, or even harm.
So before we romanticize this serpent as a symbol of power, we need to talk about spiritual readiness and cultural respect and the real risks of engaging with forces that you may not fully understand. This condundalini energy is not something to experiment with casually. It's a sacred process that is deeply rooted in spiritual traditions and you need to be properly prepared. The consequences can actually destabilize you or even be dangerous to you. I'm going to include this article uh in the show notes.
I'll include the link and it's just kind of a recap. But basically, I wanted to include this because I've heard this before and I actually know somebody who had an experience activating their condundalini, but after they did that, their life became so unhinged, they were almost caught up in I mean, I want to say spiritual psychosis. I want to say that. I I don't know. But I feel like they're almost caught up in wanting to just be meditating all day long.
Uh didn't want to work, didn't want to take care of their family. It was It's pretty It's pretty strange, I'll just say. And I listened to a lot of podcasts myself and I was a while back listening to Mysterious Universe, one of my favorite podcasts. And they were talking about the dangers of awakening your kundalini. And I was like, you know, since we're talking about the snake, let's throw this in because you might be thinking about doing this.
But again, it's not something to experiment with casually. It really is a sacred process that's deeply rooted in spiritual traditions and you have to be properly prepared because the consequences can actually destabilize you or even be dangerous. So your body has to be totally purified by practices of what's called the shak karmas and ha yoga. When your mind is fully purified by a mantra and when the pranas are brought under control through practices of prayana and you have to have a specific diet has to be pure and yogic at that time you're supposed to be able to awaken your condundalini without any danger or accident. But people who hurry or blast through that condalini awakening, any practice in a halfaphazard manner, you know, just not thinking about what you're doing and inviting something in that you don't really know.
If you're not taking care of your diet, there's going to be some kind of problems. You have control and utilize this energy. Can't just do it. So, let's let's get into what it talks about. The article emphasizes that kundalini condalini awakening isn't just breath work, exercise, or a yoga trend.
It's a serious spiritual transformation that can uproot your ego, bring up unresolved trauma and dismantle your sense of self. And I saw this with the person that I am, you know, referencing here. Um, but it was really odd. It was like their ego took over like they were better than everyone else. It was very odd.
So for example also people can experience mental disturbances, delusions of grandeur, emotional instability and but spiritual crisis that they're not mentally or spiritually prepared. And I definitely saw this in this person. It's not about chasing like this mystical practice. It's about being inward stably. You have to be stable inside.
You have to be mature and grounded in a lifelong spiritual practice. And this article warns that without moral discipline and devotion, awakening your condundalini can be more harmful than helpful. The article also warns against treating condundalini as a technique that's divorced from its roots. So when you're not bringing in cultural tradition, you're not practicing the very root of where this comes from. Then you might not understand it fully.
So it comes from a highly specific spiritual lineage that's involved years of study service and ethical living and devotion under the guidance of a guru misusing or commodifying these practices. The author says can only backfire spiritually as a form of cultural disrespect. It's important to honor the traditions and the people who've safeguarded these teachings for centuries. And this person found some crazy excuse my language guys, but this really blows my mind. The person I'm talking about found some crazy online.
I'm not even kidding. This lady was a hot mess. I I'm going to also say do not do meditative practices under somebody who does not have a life you would want to live. This lady was in some sort of abusive codependent relationship was sharing that with all her alleged followers um and monetizing it. I mean they were they were funding it you know they were giving her money and this is everything the article says not to do.
So do not do this okay don't find some random person make sure the person has practiced for many many years. If this is something you want to do that's perfect but please just be careful. The article also stresses not trying to force the energy to happen. So the article stresses that condundalini is not something you want to activate on demand. It's supposed to be naturally rising in those who are inwardly ready without any conscious effect.
So forcing it through intense breath work or meditation practices, especially without proper guidance, can lead to physical or psychotic like symptoms. And for example, the author also mentions people developing obsessions with their own divinity and feeling physically overwhelmed and even disconnected from reality. That is not enlightenment, guys. That's spiritual psychosis. Please be very cautious of people who tell you that they've done this without proper discipline.
Okay. And I think that's all I really wanted to share on that is all the notes I have there. I'm going to upload this for uh you to read yourself, but I thought it was pretty interesting. It takes time. It takes discipline and it's not something you can blast through.
I That's the ones that I've heard also. Um, again listening to that episode of Mysterious Universe, I was like, "Holy crap, that is the person that I know. Their life was completely uprooted by blasting through this condalini awakening. I'm not against it. I'm not against enlightenment and I'm not against different spiritual practices.
Do whatever you think is right. But when you are taking something that is not culturally relevant to yourself, you are probably not going to fully understand that you have to either put in the the work and learn everything that goes into it instead of just jumping into it. Okay? And find a good person to learn from. Don't just learn from some lady on the internet who tells you she can help you awaken your condolini.
All right, guys. Well, I hope you enjoyed learning about symbolism of the snake, blasting through your kundalini, and some of those light Feng Shui tips for the month. Just some little Feng Shui adjustments. I won't be on next week. Next week is my week off and I'll catch you guys the first week of June for the June energy update.
